Generic Name: Methylphenidate

Primary Use: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Dosage Forms:
  • Oral tablets of 18mg, 27mg,36mg and 54mg
Common Side Effects:
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Seizures
  • Priapism
  • Peripheral vasculopathy
Most common consequences of long-term use:
  • Glaucoma
  • Increased IOP
  • Potential gastrointestinal obstruction
  • Motor and verbal tics
  • Psychiatric adverse reaction
  • Sudden death in serious cardiac disease
  • Misuse and abuse may lead to addiction
  • Growth suppression in paediatric patients
How long should it be taken?

Usually stopped during or after puberty as long-term benefits are not scientifically established.

Effectiveness:
  • Concerta is effective for short-term use.
  • There are no systematic controlled studies assessing the effectiveness of the drug beyond four weeks, hence the doctor must periodically reassess its usefulness.
