FOMO in Gen Z

FOMO, or "fear of missing out," is a phenomenon that is particularly relevant to Gen Z, who have grown up in a world where social media is ubiquitous. FOMO is a feeling of anxiety or insecurity that arises from the belief that others are having more fun or experiencing more interesting things than oneself. Here are some ways that FOMO can affect Gen Z:

Social media addiction: Gen Z may spend excessive amounts of time on social media, constantly checking for updates and feeling compelled to stay connected to their peers.

Comparison anxiety: Gen Z may experience anxiety related to comparing themselves to their peers on social media, leading to feelings of inadequacy or self-doubt.

Gen Z may feel pressure to always be available and engaged with their peers on social media, leading to feelings of exhaustion or burnout, which is also a reason for FOMO. Likewise, they might find it difficult to focus on their own goals and priorities, as they are constantly distracted by social media and the fear of missing out.

Fear of exclusion is another reason. Gen Z may feel excluded or left out if they are not part of a particular social event or activity, leading to feelings of loneliness or isolation

It's important for Gen Z individuals who are experiencing FOMO to take steps to address these feelings. This may include setting limits on social media use, practicing self-care and mindfulness, and cultivating meaningful connections with peers outside of social media. It's also important for Gen Z individuals to remember that social media often presents an idealized version of reality, and that it's not always an accurate representation of what others are actually experiencing. Developing a healthy sense of self and a strong sense of personal values and goals can also help to combat the negative effects of FOMO

FOMO is a common phenomenon among Gen Z, where they feel anxious about missing important events, experiences, or updates on social media. This can lead to a constant need for validation and a fear of being left behind.

I think the FOMO affecting Gen Z is heightened by social media. People just post snippets of their lives and the other people seeing the perceived success would pressure themselves to achieve same disregarding the possible backstory to what they saw. That's why people in the Gen Z era have resorted to all kinds of unwholesome practices just to achieve success.

Gen Z experiences FOMO intensely, and it is mostly driven by social media. Seeing someone doing well creates pressure to always be involved, always to excel. This can lead to anxiety and dissatisfaction. However, people need to give more importance to real-life experiences, and recognize that online portrayals aren’t always reality.
