Occasional mood swings are normal, but when emotional highs and lows disrupt daily life, it could signal an underlying mood disorder. Conditions like bipolar disorder or cyclothymia often go undiagnosed because people assume their mood shifts are just personality traits. How can we differentiate between normal fluctuations and a clinical condition requiring professional help?

Yeah mood swing lasts a few hours or up to a day is expected. But if your mood is either severely depressed or abnormally elated for at least 4 days, it may be a sign of mood disorder

Mood swings and mood disorders may seem similar, but they have distinct differences. Mood swings are temporary shifts in emotional state, often triggered by external factors like stress, sleep deprivation, or hormonal changes. They’re common and generally don’t last long. On the other hand, mood disorders, such as depression or bipolar disorder, involve more persistent and intense changes in mood that interfere with daily life. Mood disorders require professional treatment to manage, while occasional mood swings may not need intervention.
