Crying as Catharsis

People often apologize for crying, yet it’s one of the body’s natural releases. Do you think crying helps emotional cleansing, or do you try to hold it in?

I was brought up in a culture where it was preached crying was a sign of weakness and men don't cry. I am condition on this belief so I do not cry in public, I don't even bring tears in my eyes. However, sometimes when I am in a lot of pain, especially mental pain, I do cry in private and I feel very lighthearted after crying. I truly believe crying is catharsis.

I used to swallow my tears like they were poison. I thought crying meant I lost control. Then one night it hit me hard, and I couldn’t stop. I cried till my chest hurt. But after that, I slept for the first time in days. Sometimes crying isn't a weakness, it’s the body saying, “enough is enough”.

I think crying helps both emotionally and physically. It releases built-up stress, clarifies emotions, and can provide a sense of relief. While society sometimes stigmatizes tears, allowing yourself to cry is a healthy way to process feelings rather than bottling them up.

It definitely feels good to just let those emotions out. I think it can be cathartic to cry, especially when things are bottled up for long. I have cried my fair share in my life and as much as I hate to do it, it does feel good to get those feelings out.

I believe crying helps with emotional cleansing. It releases built-up tension and pain, allowing clarity afterward. I don’t try to hold it in—sometimes tears say what words can’t express.
