Depression and Creativity

Many artists link struggles with depression to bursts of creativity. Do you feel creative expression eases mental health challenges? Which creative outlets work best as emotional release for you?

When I’m down, I usually just pick my guitar and start to be creative with it or probably write random stuff on paper. It doesn’t have to be good or perfect writing, it just helps clear my head and makes the day feel lighter.

I believe creative expression can ease mental health challenges because it gives emotions a healthy outlet. While I’m not great at art, writing and brainstorming ideas work best for me. They help me sort my thoughts and feel calmer after stressful days.

For some of us, when we are depressed, we enter into bouts of deep thoughts and reflection, and that has a tendency of lighting a creative spark in us. There are deep creative things that I have birthed in the place of deep depression.
